School of Hospitality Management

To satisfy the needs for top talents in hotel and health services industry, the School of Hospitality Management (SHM), Beijing International Studies University announced its launch in July 2013. A teaching and research-oriented school, the SHM used to be a department under the School of Tourism Management, which was founded back to the year 1992.With the theme script of “Sincerity and Simplicity, Righteousness and Faith, Industry and Persistence, as well as Extensibility and Profoundity”, the SHM has adopted an advanced cultivation model that not only integrates the profession training with the foreign language training, but also establishes a government-industry-institution-research cooperation platform for the sake of fostering the internationalized, comprehensive and creative management talents competent and adequate to the work of modern hotel and health service industry.

The SHM provides both undergraduate and master degree programs, with 240 full-time hotel management undergraduate students, 20 research-oriented master students, and 20 foreign students enrolled at present. In addition, the school has a group of part-time master students who are currently working in the hotel industry while pursuing the tourism administration master degree (MTA). The undergraduate hotel management major has two disciplines, namely the international hotel management and health service management. Moreover, the SHM owns a variety of education andresearch platforms such as the Beijing municipal government level “Beijing International Studies University and Beijing Tourism Group Off-Campus Talents Cultivation Base”, the provincial level Hotel Industry Research Base of China Tourism Academy owned by the National Tourism Administration, the university-scale China Hotel Industry Research Center, as well as Tourism Enterprises Management Research Base, etc. In particular, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has highly recognized the SHM for its enormous education quality and granted the highest-level Tedqual certification to encourage such achievements. 

 

The SHM has fostered a large number of talents for the hotel industry and other relevant high-end service management fields. By accumulating abundant capabilities in theoretical research and social service fields, the SHM has won wide acclaim from the society. The SHM students have received a range of international, national or Beijing municipal scale top awards issued by the international (e.g. PATA) and domestic associations and governmental agencies.

 

Advantages and Features

1.Excellent Teaching Staff

The SHM has a competent teaching team including 2 professors, 3 associate professors, and 3 lecturers, all of whom are Ph. D holders graduating from famous domestic and international universities. Among the SHM teaching staff, there is 1 Beijing Great Wall Scholar, 1 Beijing Municipal-Scale Master, 1 Beijing Municipal-Scale Top-Notch Creative Young Talent, 1 national hotel rating committeeman, and 3 Beijing hotel star rating committeemen. Additionally, the SHM has invited more than 20 governors and distinguished hotel senior executives to work as the part-time professors and graduate student supervisors, as well as more than 30 university professors and industry experts to work as the visiting professors in the long run.

Furthermore, the SHM teachers have well exposed internationally, about 90% of whom have studied, visited or worked overseas in countries likeAmerica,United KingdomandAustralia, etc. Thus, more than 80% of the courses are taught in English or at least bilingually. It is worthy of mentioning that the course of International Hotel Management (taught in English) was selected as the Brand Program for Foreign Students byChina’s Ministry of Education.

Besides, the SHM has also been renowned for the strong research abilities of its members. The teachers have published scores of research articles both on the top-notch international journals such as Tourism Management, Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, and International Journal of Hospitality Management, and the domestic journals such as Management World, Nankai Business Review, and China Soft Science, etc. Ranking top among the scholars in China’s hotel educational research associations, the SHM faculties  have published more than 50 monographs and textbooks and undertaken more than 20 national-scale and provincial-scale research projects, as well as more than 50 research projects under the management of China Tourism Administration, Beijing Tourism Committee, China Tourism and Hotel Association, and other renowned tourism and hotel enterprises.

2.Fully Equipped Teaching Facilities and Practice Base

A standing member of China Tourism and Hotel Association as well as the tourism education branch of China Tourism Association, the SHM owns an advanced hotel information laboratory, hence being able to take the advantage of modern information technology in the process of teaching. The SHM has signed the strategic cooperation agreement with Beijing Tourism Group, Hong Kong China Travel Service Group, Oriental Ginza, Vienna Group, LVC Group, and Jiuhua Spa and Resort Group, etc. It has also maintained a favorable collaboration relationship with a number ofChina’s large-scale tourism and hotel groups as well as other related enterprises such as the Capital Airport Holding Company, China International Travel Service Limited, China Youth Travel Service, HNA Tourism, Jinjiang Group, Kaiyuan Group, Huatian Hotel Group, Guangdong International Hotel Management Holding Limited, Home Inn Group, and Qunar.com. What’s more, the SHM has established partnership with some internationally prominent organizations including Inter-continental Group, Marriot Group, Hilton, Sheraton, Shangri-la, Disneyland, Costa Cruise Company, and HVS. As a result, the SHM students have enjoyed a coordinated process of study, intern and employment as well as diversified support and services offered by the industry. Some enterprises have set up a variety of enterprise scholarship at the SHM. 

 

 

3.High-Caliber Internationalized Education and Teaching Platform

The SHM has worked closely with more than 30 tourism and hotel universities and institutions including the Cornell University, Purdue University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The George Washington University, Michigan State University, University of Central Florida, Northern Arizona University, University of South Carolina, University of Surrey (UK), University of Queensland (Australia), Griffith University (Australia), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne, etc. To ensure that the hotel education offered here is at the world-class level, the SHM has implemented a series of strategies such as inviting celebrated scholars and experts, financially supporting students to purse master degree overseas by the means of 2+2, 3+1, and 3+2 programs, organizing short-term exchange studies and overseas internship, etc. Some students conduct their intern in the American and European Disneyland or on the Danish Cruise Ship during their study at the SHM, whereas other students continue their study overseas at some famous universities and eventually obtain the working opportunities there. In the recent 3 years, a total number of 30 undergraduate students studied abroad after graduation, while a group of master students determined to start their Ph. D journey overseas.

 

Course Establishment

Beijing International Studies University is one of the earliest colleges that commenced hotel management major inChina. The SHM intends to continuously enhance the students’ profession abilities, international vision, communication skills, entrepreneurial capacity, as well as social responsibility so as to cultivate highly competent and creative operation personnel to answer the call of the new modern service industries such as the hotel and health service industry. In addition to the normal courses and language courses, the specialty hotel courses fall into three categories: (1) courses aiming at strengthening students’ academic research abilities such as economics, management, financial management, marketing, statistics, research method and so on; (2) courses aiming at extending relevant knowledge such as hotel management, international hotel management, food and beverage management, cruise management, hotel and property investment, hotel financial management and capital management, hotel management information system, hotel management integration, hotel service management, food security, and so on; (3) and course aiming at improving professionalism such as red wine and tea taste and appraisal, social etiquette and professionalism, health preservation and so on.

Activities

The SHM emphasizes on elevating students’ comprehensive academic research abilities and social practical abilities. While providing quality teaching resources, the school has endeavored to establish social practical platform for its students. Therefore, the students of SHM have more opportunities of attending large-scale domestic and international conferences, ceremonies, and activities. In the past, the students volunteered to participate in various events such as the Beijing Olympics,China’s National Day Parade, Shanghai World Expo, Boao BRIC Forum, Guangzhou Asian Games, and China Service Trade Conference, as well as other activities held by International Red Cross activities, UNTWO, and the like. Meanwhile, students have also attended hotel discipline competitions of all kinds, such as the PATA Social Responsibility Contest of Young Elites, the Challenge Cup, National Tourism English Contest, and Hotel Service Skills Contest, etc.

 

 

Student Employment

Owing to their international visions, solid profession foundation, high level of proficiency in English, and strong cross-culture communication abilities, the SHM students have maintained strong competitiveness in the labor market where the competition has grown more and more severe. The employment ratio of the SHM students has ranked top among other universities and institutions. After graduation, students have obtained employment opportunities in a range of hotel and property organizations, including Beijing Tourism Group, Hong Kong China Travel Service Group, Inter-continental Group, Starwood Group, Hilton Group, Shangri-la Group, HVS, China International Travel Service Limited, China Youth Travel Service, Evergrande Group, Vanke Group, and Wanda Group, etc. Some students have launched their career in other large scale domestic and international organizations such as the government tourism sectors, industry associations, banks, investment banks, consultation companies, and law firms responsible for the client management and operation management. Additionally, the ratio of further study both inChinaand overseas has also reached a high level among the SHM students. Some students have attained offer for master degree from famous universities such as Peking University, Qinghua University, Renmin University of China, and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, etc. Whereas, other students choose to pursue their master and PhD degree in some overseas universities such as the Cornell University, Purdue University, University of Central Florida, Virginia Polytech Institute State University, The Pennsylvania State University, Temple University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Besides. The SHM students have gained a favorable reputation for their creativity, restless mind, and entrepreneurial capacity.
